Stivers Ford of Birmingham has the largest and most diverse inventory of sports utility vehicles in the region, and that includes compact crossovers like the very popular used Ford Escape. There are many options among the pre-owned and certified pre-owned Escape models that we have available, but in this review, we’re going to showcase the 2019 Ford Escape. What makes this model special? Well, it’s the culmination of the third Escape generation that was originally introduced for the 2013 model year. It has most of the features that you’ll find on the current fourth generation, but it is available at a much lower price and makes it easier to own one of the higher trim levels, which have a lot of cool features.
All used Ford Escape models for the 2019 model year available at Stivers Ford of Birmingham have a 105.9-inch wheelbase, a 7.9-inch ground clearance and a 178.1-inch overall length, which is about 14.8 feet. The S has 17-inch steel wheels. The SE upgrades those wheels to alloy and adds more chrome trim. You’ll also find many SE models with the Sport Appearance package, and the SEL and Titanium trim level add roof rails and a power liftgate.
There are four core trim levels available for this used Ford Escape in Birmingham: S, SE, SEL and Titanium. The SE and SEL are the sweet spots for the average consumer, but whichever trim level you choose, this is a five-passenger vehicle that provides more than 43 inches of front legroom, more than 37 inches of second-row legroom and 34 cubic feet of dedicated cargo space, which is quite good for Birmingham used SUVs in this segment and model year. The SE has a very modern interior with cloth upholstery, zoned automatic climate control, heated front seats and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio. Reasons to consider the SEL include upgraded upholstery and potentially a sunroof.
Unlike many small Birmingham used SUVs, the Escape is actually configured to be able to tow. The trailering upgrade was available across the lineup, and you could add that equipment after the fact as well. However, if you’re shopping for a used Ford Escape in Birmingham with the intent of towing often, we highly recommend targeting the Titanium. It was offered with an upgraded towing package that allows for towing up to 3,500 pounds as opposed to 1,500 pounds for the other models.
Rear-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is optional, and the Escape has a six-speed automatic transmission in both cases. The S models have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder: 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The SE and SEL models have a turbocharged 1.5-liter four—179 hp and 177 lb.-ft.—and the Titanium has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four: 245 hp and 275 lb.-ft.
One of the main reasons we recommend the SE or higher for your used Ford Escape in Birmingham is that these models have a more modern infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen and the more robust Sync system. Another reason is that many of the SE, SEL and Titanium models have the optional Safe and Smart add-on, which includes automatic headlamp and high-beam control, frontal collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning with intervention, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning.
